Thyroid nodules & goitre
Thyroid nodules and goitre appear in the existing practice scope. A consultation can consider an examination finding, previous imaging and thyroid-function information together.
Understanding the finding
A thyroid nodule is a lump within the thyroid. Goitre describes an enlarged thyroid gland. A nodule’s features and position help guide assessment; the finding alone does not tell you whether thyroid function is altered or whether further investigation is required.
Bring the actual report
If a scan or examination prompted the enquiry, ask the practice which report and images to bring. Note when the finding was first identified and any earlier comparisons. Do not rely only on a brief verbal summary of a report.
Questions for the consultation
Ask what the finding means, whether thyroid blood tests or additional investigations are appropriate and how follow-up would be arranged. The clinician decides the assessment for your circumstances; this page does not classify a nodule or recommend a procedure.
Questions about this topic
Does a thyroid nodule automatically mean cancer?
No. Nodules need individual assessment; a lump or scan finding alone does not establish its nature.
