Hypothyroidism: underactive thyroid

Underactive thyroid conditions are included in the practice’s published thyroid interests. Bring the history behind your symptoms and the original results that prompted an enquiry.

What underactive thyroid means

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces too little thyroid hormone. It can affect many body functions. Tiredness, cold sensitivity and other symptoms may occur, but symptoms can overlap with other conditions and do not establish a diagnosis.

How results fit the picture

A clinician considers the medical history and thyroid blood tests when assessing thyroid function. The meaning of a result depends on context. Treatment and follow-up should be discussed individually; this page does not set medication doses or testing intervals.

Preparing for thyroid review

Ask which previous blood results to bring, including their dates. List your medication and supplements, and note when symptoms began or changed. Mention any earlier thyroid treatment and questions about how it is being monitored.

Questions about this topic

Does tiredness alone diagnose an underactive thyroid?

No. Tiredness has many possible explanations. Clinical assessment and relevant tests are needed.
