Newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes: questions for your next visit

A new diagnosis can raise several questions at once. Write them down so the next consultation can clarify the result and the plan for your circumstances.

Understand what has been established

Ask which tests support the diagnosis and what they show. Bring the reports and any previous results requested. The type of diabetes and the wider health context matter; do not infer them solely from a symptom list or another person’s treatment.

Ask about the individual plan

Diabetes care may involve monitoring, medication, food and activity decisions, and management of associated health concerns. The plan should be agreed with the treating team. Ask which tasks belong to you, what follow-up is needed and whom to contact with questions.

Make the practical questions explicit

Ask how prescribed treatment should be used, how results will be reviewed and what to do if you feel unwell, following the advice provided by your clinician. This article does not supply doses or replace a personal care plan.

Prepare the specialist enquiry

Dr Kaplan’s existing interests include type 2 diabetes. If specialist review is proposed, ask reception about the referral, previous results, appointment arrangements and fees. Bring the priorities that matter most to you and details of the clinicians already involved.

This is general information to support a clinical conversation, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan.
